From long-term strategic thinking to practical tools and resources, our work is designed to inform, connect and enable change across the food system.

Why This Work Matters

The UK’s food system is vulnerable. Climate shocks, supply chain fragility, and decades of underinvestment have left us exposed. Food prices have become a front-line political issue and food security is increasingly framed as national security.

Yet the system still lacks shared plans for addressing systemic challenges and coping with disruption, clear accountability for outcomes, and the involvement of the people most affected.

Piecemeal policy will not get us where we need to go — but the food system will change regardless. Do we let change happen to us through crisis? Or do we shape it deliberately?

Root and Reason works across sectors, linking evidence and practice and drawing in voices historically left out of decision-making, to build a resilient food system that is prepared, empowered and equitable — where change happens with people, not to them.
